Beyond The Money: What Is A AAA Game?

The terms “Indie game” and “AAA game” are ever-present in the gaming industry and yet their precise definition often remains somewhat elusive to us. While it’s often associated with high budgets, popular franchises, and critical acclaim, the reality of it is way more complex. In this article we want to provide you with a comprehensive definition of AAA games. We are going to explore the factors that contribute to their status, the challenges they face, and the impact they have on the gaming industry.

The Origin Of AAA

Before we look at the exact definition of a AAA game, we have to understand where the term comes from. When video games first came out, nobody would have expected that people would invest millions of dollars to develop entertaining software like that. However as hardware capabilities improved and the gaming industry matured, developers began investing more resources into their projects. This led to the creation of games with larger budgets, more complex storylines, and overall higher production values. One of the first video games to be produced at a blockbuster or AAA scale was Squaresoft’s Final Fantasy VII in 1997. It cost an estimated $40-45 million back in the day and revolutionized the gaming standarts.

The term “AAA game” dates back to the early years of video gaming. It first surfaced in the late 1990s through game retailers attempting to gauge the interest in upcoming titles. The first print in the form of a press release on the other hand came from Infogrames in the June of 2000.

Originally the term “AAA” stemmed from the credit industry’s bond ratings. Those range from D to AAA and basically represent the safest investment opportunity which are the most likely to meet their financial goals. This system dates back to 1909 but there’s even an older record of a similar grading system. In Sweden, back in the 1850s, they used grades from D to AAA in their school system. Now lets take a look at the exact definition of a AAA game.

Characteristics Of AAA Games

While there is no universal definition of a AAA game… There are certain characteristics that are commonly associated with this type of game. While a lot of AAA franchises have been under a lot of criticism lately because of the lack of quality or overpriced tiles… We are still going to focus on the most important characteristics of AAA games. If you want some examples for great AAA titles you can look into, here is a list of Top 20 AAA Video Games over on Imdb.

High Production Values

AAA games typically feature very advanced and often realistic graphics, cinematically designed cutscenes, popular actors, epic sound design and more. Usually, developers utilize cutting-edge technology and high quality assets to create their massive game worlds… All to provide us with visually stunning experiences and tons of content to explore.

Large Budgets

One of the biggest give-aways is that AAA games are often characterized by the significant financial investment. Companies invest millions and millions of dollars in the development of video games to ensure their success. This enormous budget allows for extensive development time, larger teams, and the use of high-quality assets. The bigger and more complex a game is, the more money, people and time is needed for the development.

Popular Franchises

Many AAA games are often sequels or spin-offs of already established franchises. This approach makes them less risky in development thanks to the already built up audience. Creating a completely new franchise from scratch is always rather tricky because you never know how people are going to react to it. This is why more often than not, companies buy licenses of big movies or books rather than coming up with their own unique franchise.

Critical Acclaim

While this is by far not a requirement, a lot of AAA games strive for it. Even non-AAA games sometimes get called AAA by people, just because they received high praise and their sales skyrocketed. Popular examples of that are games like Cuphead, Hollow Knight or A Plague Tale: Innocence.

Marketing & Promotion

The term “AAA game” is also very often used in various marketing strategies. This approach is to make more customers bite since it’s often associated with quality and success. Aside from it being used as a marketing tool, AAA games also receive substantial marketing and promotion efforts. This includes massive advertising campaigns, public relations activities, and community engagement though the last part often falls a little short.

Publisher Support

Games published by major gaming companies like Ubisoft or EA are more likely to be considered AAA by the public. Those publishers often have the proper resources and connections necessary to support such large-scale projects and ensure their success in the long run.

Development Studio

Games developed by well-established studios with a track record of success are more likely to be classified as AAA. These studios often have the expertise and experience needed to deliver high-quality products like CD Project Red or Larian Studios.

Target Audience

AAA games are typically aimed at a broad audience. This helps to ensure a larger potential customer base and greater commercial success. They often recycle already working franchises and systems in order to appeal to the average person like Sims, Fifa or Assassins Creed. This is one of the reasons why AAA games often feel more or less the same because of the lack of innnovation in order to appeal to a broader audience.

Different Platforms

Games released on major consoles such as High-end PCs, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo are more likely to be considered AAA. These platforms offer a wider reach and can support more demanding technical requirements as a smart phone for example. Games released for consoles often are more high-quality. This is because they first have to go through a proper application process for the corresponding company while on Steam almost everyone is able to publish their game if they wanted to.

The Risks Of AAA Game Development

Despite their popularity and commercial success… AAA games face several challenges and risks that more often than not cause companies to shut their doors forever. So, just because a game had a lot of resources to pull from… Doesn’t mean that they are safe from financial ruin.

High Development Costs

The increasing complexity and technical demands of AAA games have led to soaring development costs that easily can go out of hand. This can make it very difficult to justify the financial risks associated with these projects. Because of that, people get more and more hesitant to invest large amounts of money in case the project isn’t profitable in the end.

Competitive Pressure

The gaming industry is a highly competitive field, with numerous studios fighting for their fair share of the market. AAA games have to constantly evolve and innovate themselves in order to deliver exceptional experiences and stand out from the crowd in order to sell. In the indie game genre, devs usually come up with innovative gameplay ideas while AAA games often focus on new tech.

Changing Consumer Expectations

Consumers’ tastes and preferences are constantly evolving and unpredictable. AAA games must adapt to these changes to remain relevant and appeal to their proper target audience. Those high expectations are often what causes backlash… Especially if newly established studios and teams have worked on a project who have yet to proof themselves. With every new successful game that gets released, the bar gets even higher and more difficult to reach.

Technical Limitations

Even with the latest hardware… There are limitations to what can be achieved in terms of graphics, physics, and artificial intelligence. Developers must find creative ways to work within these constraints and make sure that their game also runs on less advanced devices or else they’ll lose a huge part of their audience due to their systems limitations.

The Impact Of AAA Games On The Gaming Industry

AAA games have had a profound impact on the gaming industry… Both in the past and the present. They helped shape the world of video games in various ways, making it to the industry we know them today.

Cultural Influence

They have helped to legitimize video games as a proper form of entertainment and have attracted a wider audience than most had ever anticipated. While video games had a rather bad reputation in the past… Thanks to AAA titles, people nowadays are eagerly awaiting the newest release of their favorite game which can be compared to a major Hollywood premier. Popular franchises sell tons of merchandise, have hundreds if not thousands of people cosplay their favorite characters on conventions and the community forming around video games are small worlds of their own. Not to mention the various social media stars that have been born through various games like PewDiePie, Asmongold or Pokimane.

Industry Trend & Innovation

Additionally to their cultural influence, they have helped to drive technological advancements in both hardware and software, leading to more immersive and realistic gaming experiences and other technical wonders. Not only did those technical advantages push the game industry forward but also other tech industries outside of the entertainment world profited highly from the newly developed processors and graphic cards… Not to mention the ever evolving use of AI and its rising popularity. So, a game with the definition of a AAA title will always cause people to expect highest level of technology.

Economic Impact

The economical impact of AAA games extends far beyond their direct revenue generated by their sales. Successful studios created hundreds of job opportunities, boosted ancillary markets and created even more ways of money generation. Conventions, tournaments, festivals, stores, merchandise or meet & greets are just a couple of events that have been built upon the back of the video game industry and they only continue to grow in popularity and market value.

The definition of a AAA game is very complex and multifaceted. While there are certain characteristics one can commonly associate with them, the overall definition really depends on the individual’s perspectives about the subject. Nevertheless, AAA games continue to play a significant role in the gaming industry, shaping the landscape and setting the standard for quality and innovation higher and higher every year.

I’ve learned my lesson the hard way when it comes to new games with the AAA status tied to them, it’s better to wait to see how they’ll turn out vs spending $70+ and being highly disappointed. Or the company a week later drops the game price down by nearly half because of how poorly it’s doing.
