1. Arcane

Arcane is an animated series on Netflix and its second season is going to air on November 2nd, 2024. So if you haven’t watched it yet, you should definitely give it a try because the first season was an absolute masterpiece.

It plays in the world of League of Legends in the opulent city of Piltover, a magnificent place that thrives under the blue sky. But beneath it all lies Zaun, a grimy and dirty undercity that gets choked by fumes and desperation. For ages, those two cities have been on the brink of war, fueled by a power struggle and the allure of arcane technology that has risen in recent years.

At the center of the story are the sisters Vi and Jinx, two young girls whose lives take a dramatic turn after a world-changing discovery. Torn between Piltover’s order and Zaun’s rebellion, their paths diverge. Meanwhile, a cast of inventors, politicians, and revolutionaries all play a part in escalating the conflict.

2. Five Nights At Freddy’s

Five Nights at Freddy’s is probably the biggest indie game horror franchise in the last decade and broke a lot of records when they released the movie in 2023. If you are a huge fan of the FNAF universe, then you are probably going to love it.

Down on his luck and haunted by past trauma, Mike Schmidt takes on a night security guard job at the once-popular, now-abandoned Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria. At first, it seemed like an easy paycheck but it quickly turned into a terrifying fight for survival. The supposedly child-friendly animatronics called Freddy, Bonnie, Chica and Foxy come alive after dark. Mike gets trapped inside the restaurant with these malfunctioning machines, forced to rely on a network of security cameras and limited resources to defend himself from their nightly attacks. As the nights go by, disturbing dreams plague Mike, foreshadowing a dark secret from Freddy Faszbear’s past. To be able to survive until dawn, Mike must not only outsmart the relentless animatronics but also confront the pizzeria’s chilling history.

3. Castlevania

Castlevania has been a huge milestone in gaming history as one of the name-giving games to the Metroidvania genre. In 2017, they co-operated with Netflix and created a very impressive show based on the video game with 4 whole seasons.

In a grim and gothic Eastern Europe, the stage is set for a bloody conflict in Castlevania. Dracula, a powerful vampire fueled by grief and rage, unleashes a monstrous horde upon the land of Wallachia. The horrific act stems from the tragic burning of his wife, Lisa, a humanist scholar condemned by the corrupted church. To face this growing darkness, Trevor Belmont, the last descendant of a legendary clan of vampire hunters, emerges from his self-imposed exile of drink and despair. However, Trevor isn’t alone. He joins forces with Sypha Belnades, a wise and scholarly magic user, and Alucard, Dracula’s conflicted son wrestling with his own loyalties. This unlikely trio of a monster hunter, magician, and half-vampire, must overcome their differences and unite against a common enemy.

4. The Last Of Us

The Last Of Us was an outstanding game when it first came out in 2013. The graphics, the story, the setting… It captured the hearts of gamers by storm and to the surprise of many, the show adaptation in 2023 lived up to the name.

A deadly fungus has ravaged the world in The Last of Us and our story plays twenty years later after society has crumbled. Monstrous creatures roam, and ruthless survivors fight for scraps in the now-desolate America. In this harsh and unforgiving landscape, Joel Miller, a hardened smuggler haunted by his past, takes on a perilous mission. He gets tasked with escorting the teenage girl Ellie across the ravaged country because apparently she is immune against the infectious fungus which makes her the last hope for humanity. Their journey becomes a brutal fight for survival. They are faced by the infected clickers, violent survivors and the constant threat of betrayal. Despite their differences, Joel and Ellie forge a bond and together they go through thick and thin during their journey.

5. Sonic The Hedgehog

Sonic The Hedgehog is one of the most iconic and oldest video game characters out there. In 2020 they’ll release the first movie of many and in December 2024 the third movie is going to hit the theaters. Even though it had been rather controversial at first because of Sonic’s rather unusual design, the first movie came around to be a big success in the end.

Sonic, a mischievous blue hedgehog with the power of supersonic speed, accidentally zaps a small town’s power during his escape from this home planet. Now a target, Sonic teams up with a friendly but frustrated cop, Tom Wachowski. Together, they must outrace and outwith the evil Dr. Robotnik, a genius obsessed with capturing Sonic and using his power for his own nefarious ends. As Sonic navigates life on Earth, he discovers the value of friendship and what it truly means to belong.

6. Silent Hill

Silent Hill, one of the most iconic horror games ever released, has already received a film adaptation in 2006. While the story itself has nothing to do with the video game, they still nailed the setting and its monsters making it at least as iconic as the original.

Rosa Da Silva, a desperate mother, takes her adopted daughter Sharon on a journey to the abandoned town of Silent Hill… The Only clue to Sharon’s disturbing sleepwalking and nightmares about the place. After a car crash, Rose awakens to find Sharon missing and the town shrouded in an unnatural fog. Trapped in this desolate nightmare world, Rose faces grotesque creatures and unravels the dark history of Silent Hill, all while desperately searching for her daughter. The line between reality and nightmare blurs as Rose discovers the chilling truth about her own past and the town’s sinister connections to Sharon.

7. The Super Mario Bros. Movie

It’s a me, Mario! Is a sentence probably everyone has heard once in his life. While it already received a movie adaptation in 1993 which wasn’t well received at all, it was only a matter of time until it would hit the screen once again. If you are a Mario fan and don’t take things too seriously, you’ll definitely enjoy the new animated adaptation from 2023.

When ordinary Brooklyn plumbers, Mario and Luigi, unclog a strange pipe, they’re whisked away to the wacky Mushroom Kingdom. This vibrant world is filled with fantastical creatures like Goombas and Koopas, but it’s also under the thumb of the tyrannical Bowers. Princess Peach, the ruler of the kingdom, gets kidnapped, and it’s up to the Mario brothers to save the day. The feisty Princess Peach is quite the change to the usually extremely helpless Nintendo princess. Together with a jittery Toad and a slightly narcissistic Donkey Kong, Mario must overcome perilous obstacles and face off against Bowser’s army.

8. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

After the success of Cyberpunk: 2077 CD Project Red decided to create an anime adaption playing in the same universe. While it perfectly fits into the whole setting, people’s opinions of the show are definitely divided. Either way, if you’re going to like it or not, it is definitely worth a shot, especially if you like the Cyberpunk setting in general.

Playing in Night City, a dystopian metropolis ruled by megacorporations, is where dreams go to die. David Martinez, a talented but down-on-his-luck teen, witnesses his world crumble after a tragic event. Desperate to survive, he gets implanted with a powerful cybernetic enhancement and joins the ranks of the Edgerunners. Those guys are outlaw mercenaries who live fast and die young. Alongside Lucy, a skilled hacker or also called a netrunner, David embarks on a dangerous path to fame and fortune. However, the allure of cybernetics comes with a lot of dangers and some have to pay a heavy price.

9. Detective Pikachu

Pokemon is another huge franchise that already has its own anime and movies coming straight from Japan. But in 2019, Hollywood decided to make its own adaptation with the movie Detective Pikachu. While the style of the Pokemon is not for everyone, the story is definitely fun and heartwarming.

In the neon-drenched metropolis of Ryme City, humans and Pokemon co-exist in harmony. But for Tim Goodman, this harmony is shattered when his estranged detective father, Harry, mysteriously disappears. Determined to find answers, Tim travels to Ryme City, a place he never knew existed. There, an unexpected partner awaits: Harry’s former Pokemon partner, Detective Pikachu. Tim quickly notices that this isn’t just an average Pikachu and together, the two of them begin investigating the case of Harry’s disappearance.

10. Uncharted

Uncharted is a very popular series following Nathan Drake on his treasure hunts through various parts of the world. In 2022 Hollywood decided to make a movie adaptation of the franchise starring popular actors like Tom Holland.

Nathan Drake, a quick-witted but struggling bartender, stumbles into the world of high-stakes treasure hunting. Recruited by the seasoned Victor Sullivan, Nathan’s life takes a turn for the thrilling. Together, they race against a ruthless billionaire and a band of mercenaries to unearth a lost fortune amassed by the explorer Ferdinand Magellan centuries ago. Their globe-trotting adventure throws them into a whirlwind of dangers. I still need to give Arcane and Five Nights at Freddy’s a watch. I should add Castlevania to that list too haha. I’ve honestly only heard good things about all 3 and this just shows me I really should get on watching them.

I definitely recommend every single one of them! FNAF the movie is probably the most recent I’ve been watching (I sadly didn’t have the time to watch it in the theater when it came out). Arcane is just insanely good, even for people who don’t play League of Legends and I can’t wait for the second season to come out this fall.. The hype is real!
